Although this painting is part of the Undine series, I have called it Sedna here. Another mythological water figure, I had not heard of her until recently and she is appearing everywhere (thank you algorithm). Many different stories exist. She rules the under sea world, the underworld of the sea. And of course it was not an easy path. After a betrayal, or refusal to marry the man she was told to marry, she ran away. Picked up by her father and clinging to the edge of his boat, he cuts off her fingers and she sinks to the bottom where she becomes ruler. In other stories her fingers become the creatures of the sea. These tales are never pretty. But so rich. How hard is it to stop clinging to the boat? But what kingdoms wait for us when we do. ‘Can we not reach those kingdoms without losing our fingers?’ Maybe sometimes we can’t. What do you think?
